This book limits itself to the Brazilian part of the Amazon, to be specific, to the federal states Amazonas and Pará. The focus lies on the rivers Rio Negro, Solimões and Amazon, the cities Manaus and Belém, the river island Marajó and the rich variety of species of black Jaguar all the way to Perereca Verde (= Green Frog). Amazon has a total surface area of 6.5 million square kilometers, of which 4 million belong to Brazil. The Amazon River has its source in the Andes in Peru and is called Marañon there. In Brazil, the river initially bears the name of Solimões. As soon as it reaches the Rio Negro River in the vicinity of Manaus, it is called Amazon. The river is over 7000 km long. Some of the Amazon's tributaries are about 1500 km long.
