Brasília
has little history o look back on. Unlike other Brazilian metropolises,
the capital of Brazil did not come into being during the colonial era as
a result of the gold rush or the booms in "Pau-Brazil", sugar
cane, or coffee. Brasília is a planned city, initiated by Juscelino
Kubitschek, at the time president of Brazil, and designed by architects
Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer. The objective was to found a new capital
of Brazil. The future capital city was then constructed in less than
three years in the very center of the country, thereby fulfilling its
intention to better connect the backward middle west with the rest of
the country. On 21 April, 1960, Brasília was named the new capital city
as successor to Rio de Janeiro.
