Olinda was founded in
1535 atop a small hill between the coast zone and the
north zone, with its traditional sugar cane plantations.
Olinda was Pernambuco's first capital city. At the time,
Recife was no more than a tiny port, utterly dependent
on Olinda. This relationship changed in 1630, when Dutch
penetrated into northeastern Brazil. The Dutch
subsequently invested in Recife, while Olinda they
pillaged and burned. Not even churches were spared. The
only church which survived the destruction was São João
Batista dos Militares. The other churches were
reconstructed after the Dutch were driven off. During
the short Dutch occupation, Recife evolved into an
important seaport. Today,
Recife is the capital of Pernambuco and bears the proud
epithet of "Veneza Brasileira" (the Venice of
Brazil) because of the many bridges and rivers lacing
through the city.
